Service
Keeping Lancashire's sewage treatment plants running cleanly, safely and within the law — so you don't have to worry.
A sewage treatment plant is a big step up from a basic septic tank — it actively treats effluent before it leaves your property, producing a cleaner discharge that meets Environment Agency (EA) standards. That sophistication is great news for your land and your neighbours, but it does mean the system needs regular, knowledgeable attention to stay in peak condition. Lancashire Septics Ltd provides thorough annual servicing for all makes and models of sewage treatment plant across Preston, Chorley, Leyland, Ormskirk, the Ribble Valley and the wider Lancashire countryside.
The UK General Binding Rules (GBRs) set out the legal requirements for anyone discharging treated effluent to a watercourse or the ground. For domestic sewage treatment plants, those rules include keeping the system properly maintained and, in most cases, having it serviced at least once a year by a competent technician. Falling behind on servicing doesn't just risk an underperforming system — it can put you on the wrong side of the EA and lead to costly enforcement action. Our team knows the GBRs inside out and will make sure your plant ticks every compliance box.
During a standard service visit, our engineer carries out a full inspection of all mechanical and electrical components — aerators, compressors, pumps and any alarm systems. We check the condition of the settlement and aeration chambers, clear any blockages, top up or replace service parts as needed, and assess the sludge levels to determine whether a desludge is due. You receive a written service record at the end of every visit, which is invaluable if you ever need to demonstrate compliance to the EA or a prospective property buyer.
Lancashire's mix of old stone farmhouses, rural smallholdings and newer countryside developments means we regularly encounter a wide variety of plant types and ages — from well-established brand names through to older or less common units that other contractors shy away from. Our engineers carry a broad stock of parts and have the experience to work on systems right across the county, whether you're on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, out near Southport, or somewhere in between.
Staying on top of annual servicing is the single most cost-effective thing you can do for a sewage treatment plant. Small issues caught early — a worn aeration membrane, a pump drawing too much current, a baffle showing early signs of corrosion — are inexpensive to sort. Left unchecked, those same faults can escalate into full system failures, emergency call-outs and significant repair bills. Think of our service visit as a health check that protects both your investment and your peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions
- How often does a sewage treatment plant need servicing?
- Most manufacturers recommend a service at least once a year, and this aligns with the Environment Agency's guidance under the General Binding Rules for domestic sewage discharge. Some higher-use or older systems benefit from a six-monthly check. We'll advise the right frequency for your specific plant after the first visit.
- Do I need to be home during the service visit?
- It helps to have someone available at the start so our engineer can discuss any concerns you've noticed and confirm access to all parts of the system. For straightforward annual services on familiar sites, some customers do arrange for access without being present — just let us know when you book and we'll agree what works best.
- How does pricing and quoting work?
- We don't publish fixed prices online because service costs vary depending on the make, model, age and accessibility of your plant, as well as whether any parts or a desludge are required on the day. The fairest approach is to get in touch with a few details about your system and we'll come back to you with a clear, itemised quote before any work is agreed — no hidden extras.
- What's the difference between a sewage treatment plant and a septic tank?
- A septic tank provides basic settlement — heavier solids sink and the liquid effluent flows to a soakaway. A sewage treatment plant goes further by actively aerating the wastewater, which encourages bacteria to break down organic matter to a much higher standard before discharge. The cleaner output means treated effluent can often discharge directly to a watercourse, subject to the General Binding Rules, which a standard septic tank cannot.
- My treatment plant has an alarm light showing — is that an emergency?
- An active alarm usually means something in the aeration or pumping cycle isn't working as it should, which can cause the treatment quality to drop quickly. It's worth calling us promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled service, as catching problems early nearly always costs less than dealing with the consequences of a prolonged fault.
- Will you service a plant that another company originally installed?
- Absolutely — we work on sewage treatment plants regardless of who installed them or which brand they are. As long as we can get access to your system and any relevant documentation you have, we'll carry out a thorough service and let you know honestly if we spot anything that needs attention.
